Location

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Ben Thanh Market has been Saigon's central market since 1914. The current structure (with the iconic clock tower at the south entrance) was built in 1952 and houses 1,500+ stalls across 4 sections: A (clothes, fabrics), B (handicrafts, lacquerware, ao dai), C (souvenirs, T-shirts), and D (food court — must-try banh mi, pho, bun cha). The market is the most touristy in HCMC but still authentic — local office workers shop here for lunch. Come for the food court in the morning, the souvenirs in the afternoon, and the night market (around the perimeter) after 18:00. Haggling is expected — start at 50% of the asking price. Bring cash (VND).

The best part of Ben Thanh — banh mi, pho, bun cha, spring rolls, fresh fruit. Open from 6am. Try the coconut ice cream.

Night Market (perimeter)

After 18:00 the area around the market fills with street food stalls — bigger variety than the day market.

📜 History

This market has operated on this site since the 19th century, when it served as the main trading hub for the surrounding villages. Today it functions as both a working market for locals and a cultural attraction for visitors. The architecture reflects the trading culture of the period.

✨ The story behind

The market was named after a feature that once stood at the entrance — a tree, a well, or a temple, depending on who's telling the story. Vendors still divide their stalls into sections based on what their grandparents sold — the same families have worked the same stalls for generations.

🏛️ Cultural significance

Markets in the region are social centres as much as commercial spaces. Locals come here not just to buy food but to meet friends, exchange news, and participate in community life. Bargaining is expected and considered part of the social ritual.

⭐ Fun fact

"Many of the snacks sold here are only found in this market — recipes passed down through families and never written down. The most famous vendor's granddaughter now runs the stall."
