Bali essentials
Beyond Kuta and Seminyak — the real Bali, from Ubud's temples to the Amed coast.
Where to base
Ubud for culture and rice terraces, Canggu for surf and cafés, Sidemen for rural quiet, Amed for diving, Sanur for families, Uluwatu for cliffs and temples.
Cultural sites you shouldn't miss
Tanah Lot (cliff temple), Uluwatu (Kecak dance at sunset), Tirta Empul (holy spring water temple), Besakih (mother temple on Mount Agung), Ulun Danu Beratan (lake temple).
Off the beaten path
Sidemen valley for rice terraces without crowds. Munduk for waterfalls and cool climate. North Bali (Lovina, Singaraja) for dolphin watching and quiet. West Bali National Park for jungle trekking.
When to visit
April-June and September are ideal — dry, not too hot, fewer crowds. July-August is peak (book 3-4 months ahead). December-January is rainy but has holiday vibes. Nyepi (Balinese New Year) in March — the entire island shuts down for 24 hours.
Etiquette in temples
Wear a sarong (provided at most temples). Don't climb on sacred structures. Women who are menstruating are traditionally asked not to enter. Don't point your feet at shrines. Speak softly.
Common scams to avoid
Unofficial 'guides' at temples demanding tips. Money changers with rigged calculators. Taxi drivers without meters (use Grab). 'Free' tours that turn into high-pressure sales.
