Borneo (Kalimantan)

Tanjung Puting orangutans, Dayak culture, Derawan marine park, and the heart of Borneo.

Tanjung Puting National Park

The world's largest orangutan population. Klotok houseboats (2-3 day trips) let you sleep on the river and watch orangutans from your boat. 90% chance of seeing them at Camp Leakey.

Dayak culture

Indigenous Dayak people of Borneo. Longhouses (one building, 50+ families), traditional tattoos, woodcarving, ngajat dance. Best experiences in Central and West Kalimantan.

Derawan Islands

Marine park off East Kalimantan. World-class diving — manta rays, whale sharks, coral walls. Off the backpacker trail, mostly visited by divers.

Bukit Baka-Bukit Raya National Park

Heart of Borneo. 130+ km of primary rainforest. Multi-day treks between the two halves of the park. Off the tourist map entirely.

Getting there

Fly to Pangkalan Bun (Tanjung Puting), Pontianak (West), or Balikpapan (East). Internal flights from Jakarta or Surabaya.
