Home to the Bali Museum — the island's most comprehensive cultural collection
Cultural & historical context

Denpasar was historically one of nine kerajaan (kingdoms) of Bali, ruled by the royal family of Badung. The city's role as the capital of modern Bali dates to 1958, when it was chosen as the seat of the Bali provincial government. Today, despite being a bustling urban center, Denpasar retains pockets of traditional Balinese life — particularly in the older kampong neighborhoods and during temple festival seasons.

The city has been at the center of Balinese arts and culture for centuries. The Bali Museum, opened in 1910 by Dutch anthropologist W.O.J. Nieuwenkamp, was one of the first museums in Indonesia. The Puputan Square is named for the 1906 event that destroyed the Badung kingdom — when Dutch troops arrived to enforce a monopoly on the opium trade, the raja and hundreds of his subjects chose ritual suicide over surrender. The monument and surrounding cultural institutions commemorate this event and the broader Balinese concept of resistance.

Modern Denpasar is also Bali's center for traditional dance and music education. The Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, founded in 1967, trains the next generation of Balinese dancers, musicians, and artists. ISI performances are open to the public and provide an authentic window into Balinese culture without the tourist markup of Ubud.
